- 드디어 카사블랑카다! -
‘카사블랑카’ 멋있는 이름이다. 일단 어감(語感)이 좋다. 부드럽고 로맨틱한 뉘앙스가 풍긴다. 낭만적인 이미지가 떠오른다. 아프리카 대륙에 있다는 어느 도시의 이름이다. 언젠가 한 번 꼭 가 보고 싶은 곳이다. 나는 이처럼 어릴 때 ‘카사블랑카’를 동경(憧憬)했었다. 그리고 마침내 오늘 그 꿈을 이뤄냈다. 그토록 보고 싶던 ‘카사블랑카’ 바로 그곳에 도착한 것이다. 사실 이곳이 진짜 유명해진 건 영화, ‘카사블랑카’ 때문이다.
‘카사블랑카’에 도착하자마자 먼저 숙소를 찾아 나섰다. 친절한 현지인들의 도움으로 쉽게 찾을 수 있었다. 안으로 들어가 보니 확 트인 넓은 공간이 먼저 눈에 들어왔다. 천장을 보니 바로 하늘이 보일 정도로 설계된 특수 구조였다. 집 지붕이 없는 셈이다. 벽에는 현국왕(現國王)의 대형 초상화와 이슬람교를 상징하는 현란한 모양의 모자이크 벽화로 장식(裝飾)돼 있다. 매우 인상적이다. 실내를 왔다 갔다 하는 거구(巨軀)의 아랍인들 몇 명이 나를 힐끗힐끗 쳐다본다. 라바트에서의 분위기와 별다른 것도 아닌데 그래도 조금 긴장되는 건 어쩔 수 없다.
체크인을 마쳤다. 40대로 보이는 주인의 풍모(風貌)도 전형적인 아랍인이다. 이목구비(耳目口鼻)가 뚜렷하고 장대한 골격에 새까만 콧수염을 길렀다. 암갈색 피부의 건장한 체구다. 생동감 넘치는 벽화가 말하고 있듯이 이 양반 금방이라도 흰 두건을 뒤집어쓰고 말을 달릴 기세다. 한 손에 칼을 높이 들고 먼지를 일으키며 힘차게 말을 달리는 모습, 이는 사막 위를 질풍(疾風)같이 내달리는 아라비안 전사(戰士)들의 모습이다.
하루 숙박료는 라밧보다 약간 비싸다. 그만큼 유명 도시란 뜻이다. 배낭 정리를 마쳤는데 아직 오후 3시밖에 안 됐다. 지리(地理)도 익힐 겸 주변을 돌아보러 나갔다. 이 구역은 구메디나(舊市街地)로 라밧에서 보았던 것과 유사하다. 말하자면 프랑스와 스페인이 남긴 식민지 문화가 아닌 그들 고유(固有)의 문화를 엿볼 수 있는 곳이다. 그러나 모하메드 5세 광장으로 이어지는 큰길로 들어서니 즐비하게 늘어선 고층 빌딩들로 어안이 벙벙해진다. 내가 상상했던 곳이 아닌데……. 여기가 진짜 아프리카 맞나? 이 같은 중얼거림은 아프리카에 첫발을 내디디면서 계속된다. 스스로 고개를 갸우뚱거리면서도 거목(巨木)의 열대림 가로수를 보면 또 금방 이국적(異國的) 정취(情趣)에 쏙 빠져버린다.
내가 거리의 상점 앞을 지날 때마다 점원들은 `저패니스' '저패니스'라고 부른다. 그리고 "칩 칩(cheap)"을 연발하며 호객(呼客) 행위를 한다. 한 가지 재미있는 현상은 이곳 카사블랑카에선 나보고 '지나'보다 '저팬'으로 부르는 사람들이 더 많다는 것이다. ‘라밧’에선 거의 다 ‘지나’라고 불렀기 때문이다. 이는 카사블랑카가 수도(首都)인 ‘라밧’보다 교육 수준이 높음을 뜻한다. 물론 이곳에 일본인 관광객들이 더 많은 것도 사실이지만. 그들이 중국인을 '지나(China)'라고 부른 데는 그만한 이유가 있다.
옛날, 중국인 노동자들은 주로 서구(西歐)로 진출했음에도 불구하고 상당수는 이곳 북아프리카로 유입됐다. 그때 중국인들을 불렀던 이름이 통칭 ‘지나’였다. 당시의 모로코 현지인들에게 중국인은 동양인 그 자체로 인식됐다. 즉, 동양인 하면 중국인이었던 셈이다. 오늘날 세상이 바뀌어 경제 대국의 일본인들이 지구촌에 등장하면서 급속히 동양인의 대표 격인 '지나' 에서 '저팬'으로 이동(移動)한 것이다. 어쨌든 그들은 백인들보다는 황인종(黃人種-같은 유색有色인종)에게 더 친절하고 호의적임이 틀림없다. 이는 남미, 아프리카, 아시아 공통이란 것이 내 경험이다. 유사한 피부색에 더 친밀감을 느낀다고 할까. 이와 관련한 얘기도 많지만, 다음으로 미룬다.
날이 어두워지기 전에 숙소로 돌아왔다. 저녁이 되니 숙소의 분위기는 난장판에 가깝다. 갑자기 현지인들로 북적댔기 때문. 알고 보니 그들은 가족 단위로 도시(都市)를 구경하러 온 말하자면 국내 관광객인 셈이다. 어른, 아이들 할 것 없이 떠들고, 야단들이다. 이 같은 모습은 매우 동양적이다. 아니 구체적으로 한국적 또는 중국적이라 할 수 있다. 좋게 말하면 가족적 유대감(紐帶感)이나 끈끈함이 묻어나는 인간 공동체라고 말할 수 있고, 나쁘게 말하면 공동생활의 예의나 규범을 어기는 몰상식(沒常識)하고 추(醜)한 행동인 것이다. 아무튼, 이 같은 현상은 흔히들 말하는 선진국에선 보기 드물다.
호스텔의 라운지는 따로 없다. 안마당 가운데 자리잡은 넓은 땅바닥(타일은 깔았지만)이 바로 라운지다. 거기엔 긴 소파도 있고 TV도 있다. 그리고 침대가 있는 방과 라운지 사이엔 벽만 있지 천장이 없다. 그래서 방 안에 있어도 라운지에서 얘기하는 조그만 소리까지 세세(細細)히 귀에 들린다. 일찍 잠을 청해도 쉽지 않은 이유다. 그렇다고 짜증스러운 건 아니다. 나 자신도 대한민국(大韓民國) 출범과 동시에 저토록 시끌벅적한 과정을 거쳐 오늘에 이르렀기 때문이다. 단, 당시엔 우리보다 배나 더 잘 살던 저들보다 오늘날은 우리가 저들보다 수십 배 더 잘살게 됐다는 엄연(儼然)한 사실에 자부심(自負心)을 가지고 감사하는 것이다.
새벽이다. 알라신에게 기도(祈禱)를 바치는 시간인가 보다. 적막(寂寞)의 고요를 깨뜨리고 울려 퍼지는 코란의 독경(讀經) 소리가 귓전을 때린다. 과연 저들은 이 시간에 실제로 일어나 엎드려 기도하고 있을까. 기도한다면 그 내용은 무엇일까. 궁금증이 꼬리를 물고 이어진다.
이런 말이 생각난다. '종교(宗敎)는 개똥벌레와 같은 것으로서, 반짝이기 위해서는 어둠이 필요하다.' 그렇다. 개똥벌레의 존재는 어둠에서 확인된다. 그러나 그 어둠은 흔히 두려움과 고통 그리고 악(惡)으로 비유되는 피하고 싶은 것들이다. 그런데 이 같은 부정적인 요소의 상당수는 우리의 마음에서 비롯된다고 할 때, 개똥벌레의 숫자는 줄일 수도 늘릴 수도 있다. 만약 개똥벌레가 많은 세상에 산다면 악의 요소인 어둠이 짙다는 뜻일 테고, 개똥벌레가 없는 세상에 산다면 밝고 아름다운 세상일 것이다. 이 역시 각자 선택(選擇)의 몫이 아닐까 싶다. <계속>

Here I am in Casablanca! -
Casablanca is a cool name. It feels the subtle nuance and romantic sounds. It also makes a lovely image. This is the name of a city in the African continent. When I was young, I really longed for “Casablanca”. And finally, I made it today. In fact, “Casa” has become more popular since the famous movie "Casablanca." opened.
On arriving in Casablanca, I tried to find a guesthouse. Easy for me to find it with the help of friendly locals. As I walked in, I saw a wide-open space. When looking at the ceiling, I found there’s no roof so that I could see the sky above me. The wall was decorated with a large portrait of the current king and a mosaic mural that was a symbol of Islam. The murals were also very impressive. Some of the Arabs who went back and forth in the room looked at me by glimpse. The atmosphere was not much different from Rabat, but I felt a little nervous.
Finished the check-in. The hostel's owner looked of 40 was a typical Arab. He had a mustache with large eyes, a nose and a large physique. It’s a sturdy body of dark brown skin. As the lively mural said to me, this guy also seemed in a hurry to put on a hood and running a horse. It’s the appearance of the Arabian warriors raising the knife in one hand, running the dust on the desert.
The room charge was a bit of high than Rabat. It meant it’s a famous city. Finished arranging my backpack but it’s only 3pm. Went out to check the geography and the surrounding area. This area was similar to what I saw in Rabat in old Medina (old town). It’s a place where I could get a glimpse of the unique culture of the locals, not the colonies that France and Spain had left. However, when got to the Mohamed V, the crowded skyscrapers dazzled me. It was a moment when my imagination was deflected. “Is this really Africa?” My muttering like this continued as I took my first steps in Africa. Even while I tilted my head, when I saw the large trees along the tropical forest, I quickly fell in love with the exotic atmosphere.
Whenever walking along the street shops, the sellers called me “Japanese” or “cheap” and acted as touts. One interesting thing was that here in Casablanca there were more people who called me "Japanese" than "Jina" It meant that Casablanca was more educated than the capital city of Rabat. Of course, there were more Japanese tourists here, though. The only reason why they called me “Jina” as follow:
In the old days, although Chinese workers mainly moved to the West, a significant number of them migrated here to North Africa. At that time, the name that called the Chinese people was called 'Jina'. For the Moroccans in those days, the Chinese were recognized as Oriental people themselves. In other words, Asian people were Chinese. Today, as the world has changed and Japanese people in the economic power have appeared in the global village, they have rapidly moved from 'Jina' to 'Japanese'.
In any case, they surely were kinder and more favorable to the yellow race than to the white people. As far as I know, this is common in South America, Africa and Asia. They seem to feel more intimacy with similar skin tones. There are many hidden stories related to this, but I'll tell you later.
Returned to the hostel before dark. In the evening, the atmosphere of the hostel was close to a mess, crowded by the locals. It turned out that they were domestic tourists who came to visit the city as a big family unit. It’s a kind of Asian style. Just like the same phenomenon in Korea and China. It might be said to be a human community with a sense of family ties or stickiness. On the other hand, it could be an illogical and ugly behavior that breaks courtesy and norms of community life. Anyway, I think this kind of atmosphere is rare in developed countries.
The concept of the hostel's lounge was different. The spacious ground (set in tiles) in the center of the courtyard was the lounge. There were long sofas and a TV set. Walls between the rooms with the bed and the lounge. There was no ceiling. Even though, being in the room, I could hear the little vocal sounds in the lounge. That was why it’s not easy for me to sleep early. That's not annoying, though. This is because I myself went through such a noisy process at the same time as the launch of the ROK. But back then, they were twice as wealthy as us. Today, I am proud and grateful that we are dozens of times better off than them.
It’s dawn. Time to pray to Allah for them. The sound of the Koran, which resonated with the silence of the darkness, hit my ears. Wondered if they really up and praying at this so early time? If so, what they prayed for? I had a lot of curious questions about it.
It’s said that 'Religion is like a firefly and it needs darkness to shine.' Right. The presence of firefly is confirmed in darkness. But the darkness is often something to avoid. Being compared to fear, pain and evil. However, many of these negative factors may be in my heart. It means I can control the number of fireflies, reduced or increased. If I live in a world where fireflies are many, it means that darkness is the factor of evil. If I live in a world without fireflies, it can be a bright and beautiful world. This also can be a matter of my choice.
