제이크 설리번 미국 백악관 국가안보보좌관은 20일 김정은 북한 노동당 총비서가 최근 당 전원회의에서 "대화에도 대결에도 다 준비돼 있어야 한다"고 발언한 것과 관련해 "흥미로운 신호"라면서 대화에 나설지에 대한 북한의 분명한 신호를 기다리고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
  
  설리번 보좌관은 이날 미국 ABC방송에 출연해 "이번 주 그의 발언을 흥미로운 신호로 본다"며 북한이 앞으로 나아갈 길에 대해 어떤 종류의 더 직접적인 의사소통을 후속적으로 취하는지 지켜보기 위해 기다릴 것이라고 말했습니다. (We are awaiting a clear signal from Pyongyang as to whether they are prepared to sit down at the table to begin working in that direction. His comments this week we regard as an interesting signal. And we will wait to see whether they are followed up with any kind of more direct communication to us about a potential path forward.)
  
  그는 "시간이 말해줄 것"이라며 "조 바이든 미국 대통령이 전한 것은 미국이 한반도의 완전한 비핵화라는 궁극적인 목표를 향한 북한 핵 프로그램의 도전에 대처하기 위해 북한과 원칙에 입각한 협상에 관여할 준비가 돼 있다는 것"이라고 말했습니다.
