아내의 태국여행 3일차:
치앙마이 올드타운 사원
치앙마이역에서 7시에 송태우(아래 참조) 1인당 50밧씩 주고 타패게이트로 이동했습니다. 역을 나오면 송태우 호객꾼들이 송태우를 외치는데, 갈 방향을 이야기하면 송태우로 데려다 줍니다.
참고; 쑹태우 혹은 툭툭이라 불리는 것은 태국과 라오스 미얀마에서 삼륜차, 픽업 또는 더 큰 트럭을 개조한 차량을 의미하며 공유 택시 또는 버스로 사용됩니다. 물론 인도, 필리핀, 스리랑카, 인도네시아, 네팔, 방글라데시 등에서도 이와 유사한 교통수단을 많이 볼 수 있습니다(아래 사진 참조).
숙소에 도착해 체크인하고, 방 배정은 2시지만 10시 30분에는 해주겠다고 해서 짐 맡기고, 올드타운 사원을 보러 가기로 했습니다. 타패게이트의 메인도로 왼쪽, 오른쪽 편 사원을 쭉 보았습니다. 사원마다 조금씩 차이가 있습니다. 저희는 불교신자가 아니라 정확한 명칭은 모르지만 사진을 보시면 그 차이가 느껴질 것입니다.
사원 뒤편에서 국수를 팔고 있어서 각종 열대나무가 잘 가꿔진 정원에서 국수를 먹었습니다. 양은 적지만 20밧 800원 국수. 이런 훌륭한 장소에서 먹는 음식 치고는 가격이 저렴합니다^^
10시 30분 숙소로 돌아와 방 배정받고, 샤워하고, 쉬다가 다시 나왔습니다. 예전에 왔을 때는 일요시장을 토요일에도 했는데, 요즘은 코비드 기간이라 왠지 안할 것 같은 기분이 들어 리셉션 직원에게 물어 봤습니다. 토요일에도 하는지…선데이 마켓은 성 안에서 하고, 토요일에는 치앙마이게이트 바깥길에서 토요마켓을 한다고 합니다.
해자를 따라 치앙마이 게이트로 걸어가다가 치앙마이 게이트 근처에 치앙마이 시장이 있길래 들어가 보니 아침 시장인지 대부분 문을 닫고 몇 개의 시장만 열었습니다. 토요야시장이 열리는 5시까지 있기에는 더워서, 치앙마이 시장 옆의 대로를 따라서 타패메인길 쪽으로 걸었습니다.
걷다가 붉은색이 화려한 사원 한 곳을 보고, 늦은 점심을 먹기 위해 에어컨이 있고, 인테리어가 예쁜 고급 식당에 가서 새우볶은밥과 새우팟타이를 먹었습니다. 음료수로 물만 시켰더니, 수시로 다른 음료나 디저트가 필요한지 물어 옵니다. 저희는 둘 다 밥먹을 때 단음료수 먹는 것 좋아하지 않고, 양이 적다 보니 밥 먹고 나니 디저트가 들어갈 위가 남아 있지 않습니다^^ 가격은 음식 2개와 물 1병에 345밧^^
식사하고 건너편에 있는 왓체디루앙을 보러 갔습니다. 개인적으로 올드타운 성 안에 있는 사원 중 그 사원이 가장 인상에 남습니다.
숙소로 돌아오다 숙소 근처 마사지점에서 발마사지 받고, 팁을 후하게 줬더니 바나나 5알을 사장이 줘서 들고, 편의점에 들려 먹을거리를 사가지고 귀가했습니다.
숙소에 돌아오니 서양인 가족이 수영장에서 놀고 있습니다. 그런데 저희가 바로 들어오고 천둥, 번개까지 치는 스콜이 쏟아졌습니다. 숙소에서 빗소리를 듣고 있으니 기분이 좋습니다.
늦은 점심으로 배불러서 저녁은 굵은 손가락 바나나 5개와 망고 2개로 대신했습니다. 치앙마이 시장에서 사 온 망고와 마사지 가게에서 받은 몽키바나나는 당도가 높았습니다. 과일로 배부르다고 편의점에서 사 온 롤케잌은 먹지도 못했습니다^^ 치앙마이 첫 날은 성공적~~~

Day 3 of my trip to Thailand
Old Town Temple in Chiangmai
There were many Songtaew(see below) drivers who were waiting for guests in front of the station. They shouted loudly to take his own taxi. We chose one after knowing his fare for our destination. It's 50 baht(less than two dollars) per person. It's 7 am at Chiang Mai Railway Station. We are now running through the dawn of Chiangmai by their special taxi, Songtaew.
tips; Songtaew(TukTuk) means a kind of passenger vehicle in Thailand and Laos adapted from a tricycle, a pick-up or a larger truck and is used as a share taxi or bus. Of course there're something similar to this exists in India, Philippines, Sri lanka, Indonesia, Nepal, Bangladesh, etc. (see the pics below)
We arrived at the hotel and checked in first. The room will be open from 2 pm, but the man at the counter said he would do it for us at 10:30, so we decided to leave our luggage there and go see the Old Town temple. We looked all the way around the temple on the left and right side of the main road at Tapagate. Each temple is slightly different. Since we are not Buddhists, so we don't know the exact name, but if you look at the picture below, you will feel the difference.
We enjoyed noodles in a garden restaurant with various tropical trees in the back of the temple. It's not big noodles though but the price is only 20 baht (less than a dollar). Lucky enough for us to enjoy such delicious food with less expensive price in such a great place^^
Came back to the hotel at 10:30 and got a room, took a shower, rested, and went out again. When I used to come here before Pandemic, they opened a Sunday market on Saturday. So, I asked the staff if there's any change because it's a covid period these days. He said Sunday Market will be held inside the castle and Saturday Market is to be held outside Chiang Mai Gate on Saturday.
We kept walking along the moat to Chiang Mai Gate. There was Chiang Mai Market. When we went in there, most of the morning market shops were closed and only a few were open. It was too hot for us to stay until 5 o'clock when the Saturday night market would open. We walked again along the boulevard next to Chiang Mai Market toward the main street of Tapae.
We found a temple with a splendid red color while walking down the street. We immediately entered the fancy restaurant with an air conditioner next to the temple and had fried rice and shrimp podtai. Since we ordered drinking water only, the staff came to us from time to time and asked if we needed another soft drink or dessert. We both don't drink sweet drinks when we eat. We don't eat desserts after meals because we have not enough rooms for them. ^^ The price was 345 baht (about 10 dollars) for 2 bottles of food and 1 bottle of water ^^
After eating, we went to see Watchediluang across the street. I personally find that temple the most impressive among the temples in Old Town Castle.
On our way back to the hotel, we had our foot massaged from a massage shop near the hotel and then we tipped them more than they expected, and they gave us five bananas for the gift. We stopped by the convenience store to buy some food and backed in to the hotel.
When we returned to the hotel, Western families were enjoying swimming and playing in the pool. However, as soon as we got here, there was a unique scole phenomenon here, with thunder and lightning. I feel good to hear the rain pouring through the hotel window for a while.
As we are already full of the late lunch. So the five bananas and two mangoes were good enough for our supper. The mango we bought at Chiang Mai Market and the monkey banana we got at the massage shop were high in sugar content. So sadly we couldn't even eat the roll cake that we bought from the convenience store^^ Anyway, our Chiang Mai's first day was successful!
