  개인이 부자인 것보다 나라가 더 부자인 국민들(일본 등 대부분 선진국들), 그들은 지금 한국처럼, 개인은 부자지만 나라는 빚더미에 앉아 있는 국가와 국민을 비웃고 무시한다. 그들은 한국의 경제 사정을 꿰뚫어 보고 있다. 2022. 4. 6. 중앙일보에 의하면 국가 부채가 사상 처음으로 2000조 원을 돌파해, 2196조 4000억 원을 기록했다. 1년 전보다 214조 7000억 원(10.8%)이 문재인 정부서 늘었다. 코로나 극복을 위해 재정지출을 늘렸고, 공무원 수 증가 등에 따른 공무원·군인연금 등의 미래 지급 부담이 늘어났기 때문이라고 한다. 국민 1인당 갚아야 할 나랏빚(국가채무)도 1869만 원이다. 1년 새 236만 원이 는 것이다. 결국, 우리 자식 세대가 다 갚을 빚이다.
  
  이 같은 사정을 잘 알고 있는 진짜 부강(富強)한 나라들은 말한다. 한국은 아직 정신을 못 차렸다고. 아직 약소국(弱小國)의 서러움이 얼마나 비참(悲慘)한 것인지 모른다고. 그렇다. 그들의 말이 사실일지 모른다. 한국인들은 아직 진짜 배고픈 슬픔이 어떤 것인지 모른다. 힘이 없어 나라와 자유를 빼앗긴 노예(奴隷) 생활의 국치(國恥)와 굴욕(屈辱)이 얼마나 비통(悲痛)한 것인지 더 당해 봐야 알런지 모른다. 강대국의 무자비(無慈悲)한 능멸(凌蔑)과 치욕을 더 겪어 봐야, 이스라엘처럼, 정신이 번쩍 들지 모른다. 슬픈 얘기지만 이미 그런 조짐이 여러 곳에서 보인다는 게 객관적인 견해(見解)다. 정말 다시 헐벗고 굶주리던 시대로 되돌아간다면 과연 몇이나 견디어낼 수 있을지 자못 궁금하다. 한국인들, 특히 초근목피(草根木皮)의 말뜻도 모르는 풍운아(風雲兒) 세대들이 그렇다.
  
  물론 어느 나라 어느 민족이든, 국가적 위기로 망한다 해도 소수의 권력자와 재산가(財産家)는 살아남는다. 이는 자연적 현상이니 논외로 친다. 문제는 절대다수(絕對多數)의 평범한 사람들이다. 그래서 보통 사람들이 더 똑똑해야 한다. 나라 걱정을 더 많이 해야 하고 나아가 적극적인 관심도 보여야 한다. 최고 지도자의 국가관, 역사관 등 그의 사상과 이념에 따라 자신과 자신의 가족이 죽고 산다(베네수엘라, 그리스 등. 북한 중공은 아예 투표가 없으니 제외).
  
  스스로 자국(自國)을 지키지 못하거나 지킬 의지가 없는 국민에겐 희망이 없다. 본격적인 정글의 법칙만 있을 뿐이다. 여기서 살아남는 자, 그는 필경(畢竟) 유비무환(有備無患) 정신의 소유자일 것이다(아우슈비츠에서 살아남은 프리모 레비처럼, 나는 이곳을 방문 레비의 흔적을 확인한 바 있다). 그렇다. 한동안 우리는 팔자(八字)에도 없는 진짜 선진국의 부와 자유를 누렸다. 누구나 자신이 원하면 한없이 공부도 하고 자유롭게 세계여행(世界旅行)도 했다. 이제 더는 그런 행운이 불가능할지도 모른다. 매우 참담(慘憺)하고 통탄(痛嘆)스러울 것이다. 이미 우물 밖 세상의 자유와 멋과 맛을 다 알아 버린 시대의 행운아(幸運兒)들이 특히 그럴 것이다.
  
  싫다 좋다, 예 아니요를 분명히 말할 수 있는 나라 사람들, 웃고 싶을 때 웃고, 화내고 싶을 때 화낼 수 있는 나라 사람들, 그들에겐 그럴 만한 자격(資格)이 있다. 스스로 키운 힘(實力)이 있기 때문이다. 그들은 수많은 전쟁을 치렀다. 승패(勝敗)를 교차하면서 값진 교훈을 얻었다. 명분보다 실리를, 말로 하는 애국보다 행동으로 하는 애국을, 비겁한 삶보다 당당한 삶을 선택했기 때문이다. 이를 바탕으로 그들은 물자를 절약하고 합리적 경제생활을 하면서 실질적 힘(國力)을 구축했다. 우린 그들이 국력을 쌓을 때 뭘 했는지, 그리고 지금은 또 어떤 생각과 어떤 행동을 하고 있는지 냉철히 살펴볼 때다.
  
  늦다고 생각될 때가 가장 빠르다는 말이 있다. 지금 당장 경제 공부도 하고 자원절약(資源節約)을 실천해도 늦지 않을 것이다. 다시는 피눈물을 흘리는 약소국의 서러움을 자초(自招)해선 안 된다. 더더욱 후손들에게 물려주는 건 죄악(罪惡)이다. 하늘은 스스로 돕는 자를 돕지, 같은 실수를 반복하는 바보들을 도와주진 않는다. 세상 모두가 부러워하는 부국(富國)과 선진국(先進國) 그리고 강대국(强大國)이 되는 길, 이는 경제개념을 터득하고 아끼고 절약하는 정신과 실천이 따를 때 가능할 것이다. 세상에 그저 얻어지는 건 아무것도 없다는 진실을 세계여행(世界旅行)할 때마다 실감했다.
  
  어디 나뿐이겠는가. 오늘날 한국인은 둘 중 한 명은 세계여행을 하는 세상이다 (한국관광공사에 따르면 2019년(코로나 이전) 해외로 나간 한국인 관광객 수는 2871만4247명으로 전체 인구의 절반을 넘었다. (최근 2023년 1월, 세계 여권파워 랭킹에서 한국이 세계 2위). 이 정도면 세계 어느 나라도 대한민국을 무시 못 한다. 아니 두려워한다. 단, 본 만큼 알고, 아는 만큼 행동하는 한국인의 성숙한 모습을 보일 때만 그렇다.
  
  최근, 방콕에서 만난 영국인 친구, 그는 한국을 여행했다. 그는 말했다. “한국은 정말 재미있는 나라입니다. 진짜 천국에 살면서 진짜 지옥에 산다고 말하니까요. 그런데 더 웃기는 건 진짜 지옥에 살고 있는 북한 사람들은 자기들이 진짜 낙원에 살고 있다고 합니다. 한국인들은 남북 통틀어 다들 정상이 아닌 것 같아요. 한국 사람들은 힐링을 너무 좋아해요, 입에 달고 살아요. 힐링의 뜻을 몰라서 그런가 봐요…” 그렇다. 모순덩어리 한국이다. 세계 최고의 IQ를 자랑하는 한국인, 대학 진학률 세계 최고의 한국, 세계 최고로 눈치 빠른 한국인, 안 보고 안 배워도 보고 배운 사람보다 더 잘 안다고 큰소리치는 한국인, 모두가 다 천재요 박사인 한국인들이다. 그런데 이렇게 똑똑하고 영리한 한국인들이 거짓말에 속는 것도 세계 제일이다. 정작 적(敵)과 아군(我軍)도 구분 못 하고, 선과 악, 참과 거짓도 식별(識別) 못 하기 때문이다. 앞뒤가 안 맞아도 너무나 안 맞지 않는가. 아무튼, 세계인들의 눈에 한국은 예의(禮意)상 좋게 말해서 재미있는 나라임은 틀림없지 싶다. 아니 실제로 세계에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 흥미진진한 사건·사고가 매일 터지는 나라이다.
  
  *한 가지 분명한 것은 대한민국은 반드시 곧 남북통일을 한다는 것. 세계 최고의 국제선(國際線) 기차를 타고 달린다는 것. 부산-서울-청진-회령-연변-하얼빈-우루무치-타슈켄트(우즈벡)-테헤란-이스탄불-부다페스트-밀라노-파리-런던. 그때까지, 대한민국이 실제로 세계 속에 우뚝 서는 그날까지, 조금만 더 열심히 일하고 배우면 된다는 것.
  
  *국가경쟁력(國家競爭力)이 아무리 어렵다 해도 누군가는 반드시 이긴다. 또 누군가는 반드시 진다. 인간사(人間事)의 게임이니까. 전자(前者)는 이성(理性)에 강하고, 후자(後者)는 감성(感性)에 강하다. 달리 말해 기분(氣分)으로 이성을 이길 순 없다. 대한민국은 전자에 속한다. 성공한 나라이니까. 국제사회의 치열한 경쟁, 그 게임의 룰을 잘 이해하고, 탐구하고, 실험하고, 연습하는 의지와 노력이 있었기 때문이다. 이미 대한민국은 여권파워 세계 2위 등 세계가 부러워하는 많은 기록을 보유하고 있다. 더욱 당당하게 세계로 세계로 더 많이 더 멀리 나가서 멋지고 아름다운 대한민국을 알리는 것이다. <끝>

  Real rich countries that are well aware of the situation in Korea say that Korea doesn't know how miserable the sorrow of the weak countries is yet. Maybe so. Koreans don't know what a real hungry sadness is yet. Koreans will be awakened only when they experience the merciless hardship and disgrace of the great powers. Just like Israel. It's a sad story but I think there are already signs of that in many places. I wonder how many Koreans will be able to endure if they go back to the time when Koreans were naked and hungry. I am worried about Koreans, especially the lucky generation of Koreans who grew up unaware of hardships.
  
  Of course, even if any nation is ruined by a national crisis, a small number of powerful people and wealthy families survive. So ordinary people should be smarter. They should worry more about their country and furthermore, show their active interest. Because their supreme leader's values determine their own family fate (Venezuela, Greece, etc. N.K and CCP are excluded because there is no vote at all.) There is no hope for the people who can't protect their own countries or have no will to protect themselves. They only have the cruel laws of the jungle. He who survives here, he must be perfectly prepared (like Primo Levi who survived Auschwitz, I've visited here and checked the traces of him). Yes, for a while we were fortunate enough to enjoy the wealth and freedom of the truly successful Korea. Everyone studied endlessly and traveled around the world if they really wanted to. Such luck may no longer be possible. If so, we would be very miserable and deplorable. This is especially true of Korean lucky guys who know all about the freedom, beauty and taste of the world.
  
  There are people who can say "no" and "yes" clearly. And also they can laugh or get angry when they want to. They are well qualified to do so. Because they have the power to raise themselves. They fought numerous wars. They learned a valuable lesson by winning or losing. This is because they chose practicality over face, patriotism over words, and dignity over cowardly life. Based on this, they built real power while saving resources and living a rational economic life. We have to look back on what they did when they built up their national power. And it's time for us to think hard about what we're thinking and what we're doing.
  
  It's the fastest when we think it's late. It will not be too late to study economics and practice resource conservation right now. We should never bring the sorrow of a weak country that sheds tears of blood again. Furthermore, it's sinful to pass this on to future generations. You know "Heaven helps those who help themselves", not fools who repeat the same mistake. Every time I traveled around the world, I realized the truth that nothing was free. Today, one out of two Koreans, including myself, travels around the world. Recently in January 2023, Korea ranked second in the world in the world passport power ranking. At this level, no country in the world can ignore the Republic of Korea. No, they are afraid of Korea. However, it is only possible when Koreans who know as much as they see and act as much as they know.
  
  Recently I met a British guy who traveled to Korea in Bangkok. He said that, "Korea is a very interesting country. They think of Korea as hell though they live in real heaven. But what's funnier is the N. Koreans. Because they live in real hell and yet they believe they live in real paradise. I think both Koreans of South & North are insane, not normal. Koreans love healing so much. I think it's because they don't know the real meaning of healing..." Quite agree with him that Korea is full of contradictions. Koreans who boast the world's best IQ, the world's best academic background, the world's fastest-witted Koreans and Koreans who boast that they know everything well without seeing or learning, are all walking dictionaries. Ironically, however, it is also the best in the world that such smart Koreans are deceived by lies and fake news. It's because they can't tell between enemies and allies and between good and evil, true and false. This is not logically correct at all. Anyway, Korea must be an interesting country in some ways in the eyes of the world. I don't know how long it will last.
  
  *One thing for sure is that we will reunify the two Koreas sooner or later. That we'll be on the best international train soon. Departure from Busan-Seoul-Cheongjin-Horyeong-Yeonbyeon-Harbin-Urumuchi-Tashkent-Teheran-Istanbul-Budapest-Milano-Paris-London. That we have to work harder and learn more until Korea actually stands tall in the world.
  
  *No matter how difficult national game is, there are always winners and losers. It's the law of the jungle. The former is strong in reason, the latter in emotion. In other words, we can't beat reason by feeling. S. Korea belongs to the former. It's a successful country. The reason is that Korea understood, explored, experimented and practiced the rules of the game steadily. Already, S. Korea has many world rankings that the world wants such as the world ranking 2nd of the passport power. What Koreans should do is to go out to the world more confidently and farther into the world to promote a wonderful and beautiful Korea.
