  한국은 참 재미있는 나라이다. 아니 좀 이상한 나라이다. 다른 나라에서 많이 볼 수 없는 현상들이 한둘이 아니다. 좋은 것도 많지만 나쁜 것도 많다. 물론 이런 현상은 사람 사는 세상 어디나 있다. 그러나 유독(惟獨) 한국 사회에서 눈에 띄게 나타나는 현상이 문제다
  
  가령, 한국엔 각 분야에서 전문인으로서 존경받는 인물이 거의 없다는 것이다. 다른 표현으로 소위 말하는 원로(元老)가 없다는 것. 경제계, 종교계, 군인, 학계, 정계, 법조계, 문학계 등, 어느 분야를 봐도 원로로 인정받는 인사(人師)가 없다. 물론 학연, 지연, 종교를 초월한 범국민적 인사(예:김수환 추기경)를 말한다(*혹시 추천할 분이 있다면 어떤 분일지 궁금합니다만…). 그럼 실제로 각 분야에서 연륜과 경륜, 실력과 지혜 그리고 덕망을 갖춘 인사가 없느냐면 그것도 아니다. 왜냐면, 이런 분들이 없었다면 오늘날 세계가 부러워하는 성공한 대한민국은 불가능했기 때문이다. 즉, 자유대한민국이 탄생할 수도, 산업화에 성공할 수도 없었다. 무에서 유를 창조하는 건 아무나 할 수 없기 때문이다.
  
  그렇다면 그 원인은 무엇일까? 추측건대, 남 잘되는 것 싫어하는 뿌리 깊은 고질적 병폐(痼疾的病弊), 즉 “사촌이 땅을 사면 배가 아프다.”라는 못된 심성(心性)이 아직도 계속 한국인의 기질 속에서 꿈틀대고 있기 때문이다. 남의 자식이 내 자식보다 공부를 더 잘하는 것도, 더 좋은 대학을 다니는 것도, 더 좋은 결혼을 해서 잘 사는 것도, 자기 후배나 부하 직원이 자기보다 더 뛰어난 것도, 친구와 이웃은 물론 형제간에도 서로 잘 되는 것을 칭찬은커녕 심술을 부리는 것도, 하물며 자기와는 아무 인연도 없는 사람이지만 그가 더 돈을 잘 벌고 잘 먹고 잘사는 것도 욕하고 미워한다. 한국인들은 감사할 줄 모르고 칭찬할 줄 모른다는 말을 한국을 경험한 세계인들에게서 자주 듣는다. 뼈아픈 지적이다.
  
  영어를 예를 들면, 영어 시간에 영어를 읽을 때 영어 발음을 좀 잘한다 싶으면 비아냥된다. “야, 빠다 좀 먹었나 본데…”, “야, 혀 좀 굴리지 마.” 등등. 배낭여행을 하다 보면, 특히 90년대, 수많은 한국과 일본의 젊은이들을 만난다. 기차역, 버스 터미널, 게스트하우스 숙소 등에서 만나게 된다. 각자 여행담 중엔 반드시 등장하는 게 영어를 제대로 못 해 피해를 봤다거나, 무시를 당했다거나 등의 불평불만들이다. 내가 즉석에서 상황(狀況) 영어를 글로 혹은 말로 전해주면 일본인들은 반드시 감사하다는 표현을 한다. 한국인들은 거의 안 한다. 내가 외국인들과 대화를 즐기고 있으면 가끔 한국인들이 옆에 와서 듣는다. 외국인들에게 내 영어 칭찬을 듣긴 해도 한국인들에겐 없다. 하물며 로마의 어느 서점에서 한국인 관광객이 책을 구입 후 고액권 10만 리라(1991년)를 줬는데 책방 주인이 10,000리라 지폐를 받았다며 거스름돈을 안 준다는 것이다. 내가 경찰을 데려와 해결을 봤지만, 한국인 부부는 고맙다는 말도 없이 가 버렸다. 이런 사례를 들면 한둘이 아니다.
  
  이런 병적 풍토에서는 어떤 분야든 미래를 책임질 유능한 인재를 발굴할 수도, 발굴해도 양성(養成)할 수가 없다. 한 명의 인재를 키우는 데는 오랜 시간과 비용이 들 뿐만 아니라, 주변의 끊임없는 칭찬과 격려가 절대적으로 필요하기 때문이다. 그런데도 오히려 전술(前述)한 바와 같이, 배 아파하고, 뭔가 흠집을 내고. 기(氣)를 죽이는데 더 열광하니 큰 인물이 제대로 자랄 수 없다. 대신 그 자리에는 독성(毒性)을 품은 잡초들이 창궐한다. 대표적으로 정치권을 보면 알 수 있다. 속된 말로 어중이떠중이, 쇠똥도 말똥도 다 대통령이 되겠다, 국회의원이 되겠다고 얼굴을 내밀기 때문이다. 결국, 인간의 기본은 물론 전문 지식도 경험도 없는 게다가 애국심도 자유민주주의를 지킬 의지도 없는 무능력자, 아니 인간말종(人間末種)에 가까운 자까지 대통령과 국회의원이 되겠다고 뛰쳐나와 나라를 어지럽히고 국익(國益)을 해치고 나아가 大韓民國을 부정(否定)하기에 이른 것이다. 그 결과 나라는 거덜나게 생겼고 국제사회에선 조롱감으로 추락할 지경에 놓인 것이다.
  
  결국, 그 책임은 그들을 뽑은 국민에게 있다. 이를 솔직히 인정하고 깨닫지 못하는 한 그 악순환은 계속될 것이다. 그리고 나라는 다시 거지 나라가 되거나 중공(中共) 혹은 북괴(北傀) 손에 넘어갈 것이다. 이는 냉엄한 국제정치의 현실이다. 늦다고 생각할 때가 가장 빠르다는 말을 되새길 필요가 있다. 우리가 잘사니까 다른 나라도 다 잘 사는 줄 안다. 천만의 말씀이다. 유명 관광지와 호텔 쇼핑센터가 있는 시내 등만 보고 왔기 때문이다. 세계 곳곳엔 아직도 우리가 50~60년대에 삼시(三時) 세끼도 제대로 못 먹던 나라가 억 수로 많다. 그들은 나를 보면 반드시 묻는 것이 있다. 한국은 어떻게 잘 사는 나라가 되었느냐고. 너무나 부럽다고. 그 비결이 무엇이냐고. 나도 한국에 가서 돈도 벌고 배우고 싶다고. 나도 한국인처럼 세계여행을 하고 싶다고.
  
  내가 항상 느끼는 것이지만 태국 등 동남아 공항에서 떼를 지어 커다란 골프채 가방을 끌고 다니는 사람은 거의 100% 한국인들이다. 부(富)의 상징이자 자랑이다. 그러나 세상엔 공짜가 없는 법. 아차 하면, 하시라도, 공항에서 볼 수 있는 한국인들의 골프채 가방 대신, 구름처럼 몰려드는 해외여행객 대신, 서독 광부로, 간호사로, 사우디 공사장으로 떠났던 60~70년 대로 원위치(原位置)할 수 있다. 베네수엘라, 아르헨티나를 상기하면 된다. 이 역시 현장을 직접 본 입장에서 하는 말이다.
  
  특히 한국인들이 좋아하는 말이 있다. ‘설마 우릴 공격하겠어? 같은 민족인데, 긍정적으로 생각합시다. 부정적 생각은 건강에 나쁘다. 웃으며 삽시다. 시를 사랑하고 문학을 사랑하고 예술을 사랑한다고. 평화를 사랑한다고……. 그러나 이들에겐 공통분모가 있다. 이들은 반일(反日).반미(反美)를 할지언정 중공과 북괴를 욕하지 않는다는 것. 이들은 행동으로 실천하는 자보다 말을 잘하는(巧言令色) 자를 더 좋아한다는 것, 그래서 이들은 문학과 예술을 사랑하듯이 군인과 기업인을 사랑한다는 말은 하지 않는다는 것. 자주국방은커녕 아예 민방위 훈련과 핵 공격 대피 시설과 훈련에도 관심이 없다는 것이다. 아직도 군대에 안 간 것을 부끄러워하긴커녕 당당히 고개를 내미는 문화가 개선되지 않는 한 저질 인간말종(人間末種)의 지배를 받는 노예(奴隷)가 될 수밖에 없다.

  Korea is something very rare country in many ways. There are many phenomena that cannot be seen in other countries. Of course, this kind of phenomenon is everywhere in the world where people live. However, in my view, there must be something unsual in Korean society.
  
  For example, there are few respected people in Korea as professionals in each field. In other words, there is no so-called senior statemen. No one is recognized as a veteran in any field, including business, religious, military, academic, political, legal, and literary circles. Of course, the elder refers to a pan-national figure (e.g., Cardinal Kim Soo-hwan) that transcends academic ties, regionalism and religion. In fact, there are many people with experience, skills, wisdom, and virtue in each field. Without them, It was impossible to create a successful Korea that the world envies today. I mean no one can create something out of nothing.
  
  So what is the problem? Presumably, Koreans are too jealous of others' success. For example, Koreans hate other people's children when they make better life, not to mention that they study better than their own children. I am often told by foreigners that Koreans are ungrateful. Shame on it.
  
  For example, if my English pronunciation is good when I read English, friends around me tease me, sneer me. "Hey, you must have eaten a lot of butter..." "Hey, don't roll your tongue like an American." And so on. When I went backpacking, especially in the 1990s, I met a lot of young guys from Korea and Japan. I met them at train stations, bus terminals, guest house accommodations, etc. Each told an episode related to English problem. Some said, they were damaged because their poor English. When I taught them English on the spot, the Japanese surely thanked me. But not Koreans. When I was talking with foreigners, Koreans sometimes came next to me and listened. When foreigners praised me for my good English. Koreans don't. Furthermore, a Korean couple gave 100,000 lira (1991) in a bookstore in Rome after they bought a book, but the owner of the bookstore said he received a 10,000 lira bill and didn't give him any change. I brought the police to solve the problem, but the Korean couple left without saying thank you. There are thousands of this kind of exsamles.
  
  I think, in such a bad environment, we can't find or cultivate talented kids who will be responsible for the future in any field. Cause not only does it take a long time and money to raise one talent, but it also absolutely requires constant praise and encouragement from the surrounding people. Therefore, big figures can't stand out properly in Korea. Representatively, you can see it by looking at the political circles. Even human trash tries to be president or lawmaker by any means. They have no basic human knowledge, no expertise, no experience. Moreover, they are incompetent people with no patriotism or willingness to defend free domcratic Korea. They have disturbed Korea, damaged the national interest, and further denied Korea. As a result, the Korean economic and social order is on the verge of collapse and has become a mockery in the international community.
  
  After all, the responsibility lies with the people who elected them. Unless voters admit it frankly and realize it, the vicious cycle will never end. And S. Korea will become a hungry country again or a slave to the CCP or N. Korean dictatorship. This is a stark reality of international politics. I think it's time to reflect on the saying that it's the fastest when we think it's late. Koreans think that our lives are abundant, so do other countries. No way. Cause Koreans have only seen famous tourist attractions and downtowns with hotel shopping centers from abroad. There are still countless poor countries in the world, just as we couldn't eat three meals a day in the 1950s and 1960s. They always asked me something sincerely when they saw me. "How did Korea become a prosperous country?" I'm so envious of Korea. What's the secret of Korea's success? I also want to go to Korea to earn money and study. I really want to go see the world just like Koreans."
  
  As I always feel, almost 100% of Koreans are carrying large golf club bags in groups at Southeast Asian airports such as Thailand. Of course, it is a symbol and a pride of wealth. But nothing is free in the world. In other words, instead of Korean golf club bags and cloud-like Korean overseas travelers, Koreans can return to their original position in the 60s and 70s when they left for the Saudi construction site as West German miners and nurses. Imagine Venezuela, Argentina. If you saw them for yourself like I did, you would completely changed.
  
  In particular, there are words that Koreans love. "I don't think N. K. attacks us because we're the same people." "Let's think positively." "Negative thoughts are not good for your health." "Let's live with a smile." "I love poetry, I love literature, I love art. I love peace..." And they have something in common. They are anti-Japanese and anti-American but they do not curse the CCP and the N.K. They prefer demagogues and crooks who speak well to those who practice by action. As a result, they never say that they love soldiers and entrepreneur as much as they love literature and art. They are not interested in civil defense training and nuclear attack evacuation facilities and training, let alone self-defense. That's why they're not ashamed of not joining the army. Unless this slave mentality improves, Koreans will have no choice but to become slaves controlled by low-quality bastards.
